Preliminary Agenda

Day One: Neurotech Short Courses
This half-day event is targeted at early-stage neurotechnology firms and research professionals contemplating launching a neurotech start-up. In Track A, presenters will offer a detailed background on the basics of the neurotechnolgy and neuropharmacology industries. In Track B, conference faculty will offer tutorial courses in preparing a business plan, conducting market and competitive research, and locating sources of funding specific to the neurotechnology industry.

1:00-2:30 Basics of Neurotechnology
Warren Grill, Ph.D, Senior Technical Editor, Neurotech Reports
In this session, one of the nation's leading experts on neurotechnology, Warren Grill of Duke University, will present a tutorial on the fundamentals of neurostimulation, neuromodulation, deep-brain stimulation, and related topics. The tutorial will explain how neurotech devices work, and include a discussion of product features, stimulation parameters, targeted locations.

Neuropharmacology Industry Fundamentals

This session gives attendees an overview of the $87 billion neuropharmaceutical sector, including the cogniceutical, emoticeutical, and sensoceutical segments. It looks at several different modes of treatment, such as serotinin reuptake inhibitors and MAO inhibitors. The session also discusses potential areas of overlap bewteen neurotech devices and pharmaceuticals and opportunities for collaboration with neuropharma vendors.

1:00-2:30 Obtaining Venture Capital Financing

This session offers specific and practical advice on preparing a set of initial materials, including executive summary, investor presentation, and financial model, that will attract attention from venture capital firms. It includes examples of items that have made the difference between funding and no funding decisions. The presenter will also discuss how to find the most appropriate VC firm and how to arrange a meeting with the key person at the firm.
